When you take a look up at the night sky, it’s hard not to feel awestruck by the immensity of our galaxy. Lurking beyond our skies lies a vast universe teeming with planets and places that experts have only just now started to understand. But did you know that it wasn’t until the 1990s that scientists were able to confirm that there were planets lurking beyond our galaxy? As we begin to understand these strange new worlds, the exoplanets, we are able to gain a deeper insight about what other planets exist and what may lie ahead in the hunt for a planet akin to Earth. And now, you won’t have to travel farther than the Capital City to learn what lies beyond the galaxy’s edge thanks to the NJ State Museum’s latest public lecture.
On Saturday, January 20th, you are invited to join the New Jersey State Museum for their latest star talk, “Science Under the Stars: Strange New Worlds”. This engaging conversation will begin at 4pm at the New Jersey State Museum’s state of the art planetarium, located at 205 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608. This fascinating afternoon of discovery is hosted by Dr. Josh Winn, professor at Princeton University and author of The Little Book of Exoplanets. There is no cost to attend this event, but as seating is limited, advanced registration will be required. In order to secure your slot, please be certain to enroll by filling out the RSVP, linked here: Register – NJSM.
Throughout the day, Dr. Winn will take you and your family on a journey through some of the solar system’s oddest entities. The afternoon will begin with a discussion regarding the technology needed to locate the exoplanets, and why it took scientists so long to emerge with these tools. Afterwards, you’ll have the opportunity to get to know some of the planets which have recently discovered, including some which defy anything we’ve previously seen in the solar system. As we begin to unravel what lurks beyond our galaxy, this conversation offers you and your family a front row seat to the cutting edge of discovery.
This conversation is hosted by the New Jersey State Museum, a beloved destination of learning for all ages. From little ones just beginning to explore the world to grown-ups looking to feel like a kid again, all are welcome to be a part of the fun.
