Stop Scams This December With the NJSL

Scams: an unfortunately reality of all of our lives. Whether it’s the hundreds of emails pilling up in your junk folder or the seemingly endless slew of robocalls hitting our phones every day, there’s an entire economy comprised of those trying to take advantage of our technological reality. As technology has evolved over the years, those looking to dupe consumers have gotten craftier in their methods, making it harder than ever to detect when something is illegitimate. If you’re looking to dodge these frauds and scams this holiday season, you’re going to want to tune into the NJ State Library’s upcoming webinar, “Scams and Frauds: Don’t Be a Victim!”

On Wednesday, December 13th, you are invited to join the New Jersey State Library for a day of discovering how to avoid scams and fraud. This conversation will be held on Zoom, so guests are welcome to tune in from wherever you are. Admission is completely free, all you need to do is register in advance on Zoom, linked here: Register – NJSL. The conversation will be held from 12pm to 1pm, so be sure to stay tuned, because an hour of your time could save you a whole world of hassle in the future! The webinar will be led by Melanie Hazim, a subject matter expert from the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.

Over the course of the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about common scams, the warning signs to look out for, and the steps you can take to make sure you’re protected against those trying to take advantage of you. Your host for the afternoon, Melanie Hazim, joined the Division of Consumer Affairs in January of 2016. As the Division’s Outreach Director, Hazim is tasked with speaking to thousands of New Jerseyans each year at outreach events. Throughout her career, Hazim has worked with a number of diverse groups, including seniors, non-English speaking peoples and other populations who are particularly vulnerable to be a target of scam artists. Hazim is also director of the New Jersey High School Consumer Bowl, working with her team to educate students across the state about consumer issues and scams they may face in their future in a fun, game show setting. Hazim also recently participated in a six week course with FBI’s Newark Citizen Academy, which invites local community notables to get a peek “behind the curtain” of the US’s principle law enforcement agency on domestic intelligence and security.
