Dig Into the Delaware Valley at the NJSL
Long before the first settlers ever reach our shores, New Jersey was home to a thriving ecosystem of indigenous cultures, peoples, and natural phenomena. Although the landscape of the Garden State has certainly changed and evolved over the years, resting just beneath the surface lurks fundamental hints towards understanding our past. Archeology is a powerful tool, offering humans the opportunity to learn more about the people, species, and artifacts that defined eras gone by. From the remains of ancient civilizations to the bones of now-extinct species and more, digging into our history can be an illuminating experience. And at a site as historic and consequential as the Delaware Valley, there’s no telling just what you’ll discover.
On Wednesday, November 28th, you are invited to join the New Jersey State Library for a fascinating conversation entitled “Archaeology and the Delaware Indians, a 12,000 year Odyssey”. This virtual conversation will be held on Zoom from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. Richard Veit, Ph.D., will be the host for the afternoon’s activities. As always, this virtual author talk is completely free to attend. If you do plan on attending, please be sure to enroll as soon as possible by registering here: Register – NJSL. By the conclusion of the webinar, guests should have a better understanding of New Jersey’s archeological history, uncovering countless mysteries of this community’s fascinating past along the way.
Over the course of the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to dive deeper into the archaeological remains from New Jersey’s early Native American inhabitants. These discoveries offer researchers tremendous insights into the day to day lives of these populations, including where they lived, the tools they made, the dwellings they inhabited, and more. Beyond that, however, these discoveries also allow us insights into the cultural practices and religious beliefs of these inhabitants, allowing us to better understand the lives of those who came far before us.
This webinar will be led by Richard Veit, Ph.D., a Professor of Anthropology and Interim Provost and Senior Vice President at Monmouth University. A North American historical archaeologist, his research focuses on the colonial Middle Atlantic Region. He is the author of eight books and has been the recipient of Monmouth University’s distinguished teacher award. This subject matter expert will be instrumental in illuminating the archeological record, offering invaluable insights to those in attendance.
