Uncover Hidden History with the New Jersey State Library

History is a fascinating subject. It allows us to uncover the mysteries of the past, learn more about the origins of our communities, and contextualize the world that surrounds us today. But if you’re just reading what’s found in your standard history books, you may be missing a big piece of the story. By taking advantage of genealogical records and other hidden gems in the archives, a whole world of discovery is suddenly unlocked. Whether you’re something of a historian yourself or don’t have a clue of where to start on your research journey, all are welcome to be a part of this fascinating discussion.

On Tuesday, August 15th, the New Jersey State Library invites you to their latest educational webinar, “Researching New Jersey Revolutionary and Civil War Records”. Over the course of the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the role of genealogical records in research. You will also have the opportunity to learn research tips and tricks to access information that may not be found anywhere else. The conversation will be led by Regina Fitzpatrick, Genealogy Librarian at the New Jersey State Library. This virtual conversation will be held from 12pm to 1pm on Zoom. Admission to this event is free, but advanced registration is required in order to attend. If you wish to be a part of uncovering this fascinating subject, you can register online here: Register – NJSL.

While the United States has a rich and vast history, two major areas of intrigue for many researchers is the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Especially within the context of United States history, there are perhaps no greater conflicts that have defined the American experience as we know it. These wars are of particular importance to residents of New Jersey, as many of these battles most famous moments happened right here in our backyard. During the seminar, Fitzpatrick will review primary record collections, both State and Federal, available at the New Jersey State Archives and National Archives, plus supporting secondary materials available at the New Jersey State Library. By taking a deeper dive into these records of the past, we’re better able to understand these consequential moments in our nation’s history.

Regina Fitzpatrick, the mind behind this incredible seminar, is Genealogy Librarian at the NJ State Library. In addition to the Genealogy Collection, a non-circulating 18,000 plus item collection, she also oversees the Map and Atlas Collection, and the New Jersey State Library Archives collection. Prior to her work with the NJSL, Regina worked for the New Jersey State Archives, where she became an expert on New Jersey Genealogical Collections, including Revolutionary and Civil War military collections, and helping to conduct family history research. At the State Library, Regina currently provides general Reference Services, in addition to specific Genealogy assistance, and teaches classes on conducting New Jersey Genealogy research.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more prior to the webinar, please contact the NJ State Library at (609) 278-2640 for additional details. Profound historical insights are just a few records away, so please be certain to register today!
