Trenton City Hall Kicks off Puerto Rico Week

A celebration of culture is a celebration of the human experience. Regardless of where we come from, everyone is descended from a distinct lineage with a rich culture. True magic is found When people can come together and share these experiences with one another. There are very few cities that exemplify this notion more than Trenton. Those who reside in the Capital City can consider themselves a global citizen, as dozens of cultures worldwide have made a home right in our community. The community’s celebration of culture continues as the City of Trenton rings in this year’s installment of Puerto Rico Week.

On Monday, July 31st, friends and supporters gathered at Trenton City Hall to officially start Puerto Rico Week in the Capital City. Over the next week, activities will be taking place throughout Mercer County to celebrate the vibrant people and culture of Puerto Rico. With the Puerto Rican flag hoisted high over the Capital City, this could only mean one thing: celebrations were officially underway!

Singing of the Puerto Rican national anthem

This year’s flag-raising ceremony was of particular importance, as this year’s ceremony marked the 45th anniversary of the Trenton Puerto Rican Parade. This beloved long-time tradition in Trenton has long been the community’s pride and continues to bring joy and excitement to generations of Trentonians. Throughout the afternoon, guests had a chance to get to know a number of the minds behind this incredible week of events, including the Executive Board of the Trenton Puerto Rican Community and Friends Organization and this year’s court for the parade. There was no shortage of exciting guests as well, as dignitaries and representatives of Mercer County came out in full force to celebrate.

This event was a beautiful representation of Trenton’s role as a melting pot in our small corner of the world. The singing of America’s and Puerto Rico’s national anthems signified the unity and solidarity this community has built right here in the Capital City. Sounds of music, laughter, and joy filled the air, and the energy at City Hall was nothing short of electric. Another highlight of the afternoon included awarding scholarships to two deserving college-bound young ladies in the community. Guests also had a chance to learn more about the exciting upcoming events that will pop up throughout the rest of this week’s celebrations.

The ceremony concluded with raising of the flag, which sparked thunderous cheer and applause in the crowd. With the flag officially billowing over City Hall, the sight was met with music and dancing, with many group members even waving their flags. No doubt a marvelous thing to behold, there was nothing but positivity flowing in the streets of Trenton on this particular evening.
