That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” These words are the foundation of our nation’s very soul, and the catalyst for the rights and privileges granted to each American today. Knowing and appreciating our nation’s Declaration of Independence is not just a useful piece of historic knowledge, but a fundamental method of understanding how and why this nation was formed. In celebration of this incredible document and the incredible things it has reaped, you are invited to join the Kiwanis Club of Trenton, alongside the City of Trenton, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Over 247 years after the first reading of the Declaration of Independence, residents of Trenton can enjoy a reading of the Declaration right here in the Capital City. On Friday, July 7th at noon, you and your family are invited to gather at 23 South Warren St., Trenton, NJ, where the event organizers will take to the streets and recreate the reading of the Declaration of Independence that first took place all those years ago. This is a powerful way to connect with the community, learn more about our nation’s history, and to truly appreciate the significance that this document has held in the establishment of our nation. Whether you want to use the opportunity to educate a little one or refresh your own memory, we all stand to benefit from a fuller, more comprehensive understanding of our nation’s founding.
The Declaration of Independence is the first manifestation of what would later become the foundation for the American Dream. This integral piece of documentation declared to the British Empire, and to the world, that the United States would no longer be held to the ideals of a hostile nation, instead choosing to forge ahead unlike any other nation prior to its founding. A country based on the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, with a government elected for and by the people, was unheard of prior to the establishment of the United States. And although this country is in many ways still striving towards its founding ideals, it all started with the notion that all men are created equal.
