Sometimes, the best way to get something off our chests isn’t just to talk, but to create. Finding creative ways to express your thoughts, hopes, and fears allows the artist to turn the emotional into something tangible. If you want to learn how to bring your visions to life, join Artworks for their latest upcoming workshop, “Another Me: Healing Through Graphic Narrative.”
Kicking off on Saturday, June 17th, Artwork’s latest community workshop teaches audiences the ins and outs and storytelling through artistic creation. Classes will run from 12pm to 2pm at the Artworks headquarters, located at 19 Everett Alley, Trenton, NJ 08611. This course will be led by Karin Jervert. If you wish to attend, registration is available online here: Register – Another Me.
Over the course of several weeks, students will have the opportunity to develop and express stories with a graphic narrative, as well as other comic styles. Furthermore, guests will be empowered to develop a stronger understanding of their control over, and ability to change, the stories we hear about ourselves and others. Guided by prompts, guests will have the opportunity to explore their own stories and challenge what we’re told about who and what we are.
With your newfound perspectives in mind, students will then be challenged to bring these new stories to life through graphic narrative artwork. By the conclusion of the course series, guests will also gain a better understanding of the definitions of story, visual storytelling techniques, as well as develop some understanding of cultural storytelling. Rather than focusing on a final product, the goal of this course is to foster healing and growth through the process of storytelling and creation.
Students will be guided through the course by Karin Jervert, a visual artist, poet, and outspoken activist for mental health. Certified in eCPR and Personal Medicine, Karin’s work includes essays, visual art, graphic narratives, and poetry that explores the power of creative expression to encourage positive change in our own lives and in our communities. Her study of Buddhism and improvisational comedy are incorporated into her work as well. She works to facilitates healing through art-making with workshops, public talks, and one-on-one sessions. You can learn more about Karin and check out her work at somethingwonderful.net, as well as on Instagram at @Karin.Jervert.
No matter your age or artistic ability, the ability to transform your lived experiences into a work of art is an experience unlike any other. If you have any questions or would like to learn more prior to registering for the course, please contact Artworks at firstname.lastname@example.org or (609) 394-9436 for more details.
