Make Your Voice Heard on the Black Heritage Trail
Attention all Trentonians! Your thoughts are needed for an innovative historic project coming to the Garden State.
On Thursday, June 22nd, representatives of the New Jersey Historical Commission will be hosting a feedback session regarding the development of the Black Heritage Trail. The NJHC will host three sessions throughout Garden State and choose the Capital City as one of their host locations. The evening’s conversations will kick off at 5:30 pm at Thomas Edison State University, 111 W State St, Trenton, NJ 08608. At the event, guests can learn more about Black History and share their thoughts, hopes, and needs for the Black Heritage Trail. Refreshments will also be provided to guests.
If you wish to participate in this vital conversation, you can register online here: Register – Black Heritage Trail. If you cannot attend the meeting in Trenton, keep an eye on the New Jersey Historical Commission for more information regarding an upcoming virtual feedback session. This information session is a beautiful opportunity to share your experiences and vocalize how this project can best serve your community’s needs. Furthermore, through your participation, you can be proud knowing you played an instrumental role in developing a Black History resource that will be enjoyed for generations.
In September 2022, Governor Phil Murphy signed legislation establishing the Black Heritage Trail and Commission. The Black Heritage Trail will feature historical markers throughout the state that signify the contributions of the African American community in science, journalism, the arts, and more. Per the legislation, establishing a Black Heritage Trail seeks “to promote awareness and appreciation of Black history, heritage, and culture” that will “highlight Black heritage sites through historical markers and a trail-like path that connects the stories of Black life and resiliency.” The development of this trail will help to consecrate the accomplishments of some of our state’s finest historical figures, forever enshrining their legacy throughout the Garden State.
The Black Heritage Trail and Commission is an offshoot of the New Jersey Historical Commission. The Commission seeks to advance public education and preserve the 350+ years of New Jersey’s rich history. By advocating for the continued highlighting of our history, the Commission hopes to foster an understanding of our shared heritage and encourage an environment in which democracy can continue to thrive. In preserving, maintaining, and highlighting our history, visitors from near and far can better understand what makes the communities we call home extraordinary places.
