Learn English at the Trenton Public Library

Tackling a new language is always a big step – with grammatical rules, proper pronunciations, and sometimes even a new alphabet, linguistic learning is no small task. Regarding language learning, the English language is known to be one of the trickier tongues to master. With quirky grammar rules and structures that may seem contradictory to the non-native speaker, learning English can seem daunting. However, with easy-to-understand lessons and patience, you’ll be a natural in no time. And thanks to the Trenton Free Public Library team, your next learning adventure can take place right here in the Capital City!

The Trenton Free Public Library offers several English as a Second Language courses to non-native speakers in the region. These courses are entirely free to participate in and serve as a beautiful opportunity to learn the basics of the English language. At the moment, the library is offering the following course selections:

  • English as a Second Language for Haitian Creole/French speakers: Tuesdays from 1 pm to 2 pm
  • English as a Second Language for Spanish speakers: Saturdays from 1 pm to 2 pm

These courses will be taught at the library’s main campus, 120 Academy St., Trenton, NJ 08608. The classes are free, so all are welcome to come and learn with the community. These courses feature conversational English, allowing students to learn the basics of day-to-day grammar and words. In addition, the classes are a fun and free opportunity to connect with other learners, meet with other like-minded community members, and take steps towards learning a new skill.

The benefits of English as a Second Language classes are priceless. Through these courses, non-native speakers can have an easier time navigating English-speaking countries and communicating with other community members. In addition, learning multiple languages can also have profound cognitive benefits. Research from the United States Department of Education, for example, has found that bilingual students experience several cognitive benefits, including:

  • Developing critical thinking skills
  • Acquiring other languages later down the line
  • Solving word problems

Likewise, older adults can benefit from new language learning to help strengthen their neurological function. Learning a new language as you age can help keep your decision-making skills sharp, help you adapt to change, and keep up the brain’s neuroplasticity as you age. No matter your reasons for learning, learning a new language can be a life-changing, brain-strengthening experience.

These courses are brought to you by the Trenton Free Public Library, a beacon for education and exploration in the Capital City.
