The event will occur from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Capital City Farms campus at 301 North Clinton Avenue, Trenton, NJ 08638. This event is free to attend, and all ages are welcome to participate in the fun. Throughout the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities, including:

- Enjoy an afternoon of music in the community
Throughout the afternoon, guests will also have the opportunity to learn more about African American history in the Garden State and explore how African Americans continue to impact our agriculture system in the current era profoundly. This day of celebration is a beautiful opportunity to engage with the community, celebrate the accomplishments of the African American community, and spend a day at one of Trenton’s foremost urban agriculture centers.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth is celebrated annually on the anniversary of Major General Gordon Granger’s announcement on June 19, 1865, which officially freed enslaved African Americans in Texas. The holiday has been celebrated under various names, including Emancipation Day, Black Independence Day, and more, but although the moniker may differ, the celebration remains the same. Observances typically include several festivals, speeches, educational events, prayer and religious services, and more. Juneteenth is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate the tremendous strides of the African American community and examine the rich history of contributions that this community has brought to the United States.
Celebrations will occur at Capital City Farm, a priceless agricultural asset to the Trenton community. The property serves as a working farm and allows members of the community to learn from farmers how to harvest the fruits and vegetables grown on-site. Community members can also bring fresh fruit and vegetables home during community Harvest Hours. When the farmers aren’t busy growing and harvesting, Capital City Farm is also host to several educational events that invite idents of all ages to get their hands dirty and learn more about the fascinating world of urban agriculture. If you’d like to read more about the excitement on the farm, please visit the Mercer County Parks Commission website here for more details: Home – Capital City Farm.
A day in the great outdoors celebrating the many accomplishments of the African American community sounds like the perfect way to kick off this year’s Juneteenth celebrations, so be sure to mark your calendar today!
