City of Trenton Announces Junior Public Safety Academy

Summer is fast-approaching, and school will be out before you know it. So if the young adult is looking for a fun and educational way to spend the season, the City of Trenton’s Junior Public Safety Academy is the perfect opportunity to stay busy and help your community along the way.

After a successful inaugural launch last year, the City of Trenton and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services announced this year’s Junior Public Safety Academy session. This opportunity is open to Trenton residents ages 12-16 years old. Please note that proof of residency will be required to enroll. Classes will begin on Tuesday, July 11th, and conclude on Friday, August 25th. Training sessions will take place from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Training will occur at the Trenton Fire Headquarters, 244 Perry St., Trenton, NJ 08618.

Throughout the academy, students can learn more about public safety education, public safety certification, and community service. In addition to training at the Trenton Fire headquarters, students can enjoy public safety-related social and cultural trips. Trips from the last session included exciting locations like Six Flags Great Adventure and the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.

There will also be several opportunities for certification. Available certification offerings include Boating Safety, CPR, Stop the Bleed, Introduction to Drones, Fire Extinguishers, Intro to Scuba Diving, IAED Certification, and more. This is a unique chance to gain hands-on training and master skills to serve these students for a lifetime.

Although this class is designated for a younger audience, that doesn’t mean students aren’t in for a challenge! Many training students will have the same difficulty level as adult learners. Although students are undoubtedly in for a challenge, with hard work, perseverance, and teamwork, participants will come out the other side prepared for any task ahead. It also allows students to try roles that could eventually blossom into lifelong careers. This is an excellent opportunity for youth to explore potential paths for their future, learn new skills, and push themselves to new heights.

This class is made possible through Trenton’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services. This devoted group of first responders works within the Trenton community every day, fearlessly stepping in in the case of an emergency. Trenton has one of the country’s oldest Fire and Emergency Services departments, having served the community since 1747. In addition to emergency services, the department provides community engagement through educational opportunities, community service, and more.
