Classics Books Hosts Cosmic Conversation with Chanda Prescod-Weinstein

On Friday, January 20th, Classics Bookstore was host to an afternoon of astronomical proportions.

Guests of this event had the opportunity to enjoy an intimate conversation with author and acclaimed theoretical physicist Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein. Dr. Prescod-Weinstein is the author of “The Disordered Cosmos,” which explores physics and the barriers of oppression still rife in the sciences. Her book was a finalist for the 2022 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award and the 2021 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology. As one of approximately 100 Black American women earning a Ph.D. from a physics department, her distinct perspective provides readers with a vibrant narrative rooted in Black and queer feminist lineages.

Chanda Prescod-Weinstein currently serves as an assistant professor of physics and astronomy, as well as a core faculty member in women’s and gender studies, at the University of New Hampshire. In addition to her teaching, she is also a columnist for New Scientist. Her research focuses on a broad array of essential subject matter, including cosmology, neutron stars, and particles beyond the standard model. Her time is split between the New Hampshire Seacoast and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Prescod-Weinstein’s bold approach in The Disordered Cosmos will leave readers with much to ponder. Through her book, she urges audiences to recognize how science is still plagued with racism, misogyny, and other forms of oppression. Her love of physics is central, whether she’s discussing the physics of melanin in the skin or the latest theories regarding dark matter. Her insights have been informed by history, politics, and even the wisdom of Star Trek. Her powerful perspectives will enlighten readers, with the ultimate goal of forging a more liberatory practice of science.

The signing and event were free, including a free book copy distributed to each guest. Copies of the book were also left behind for youth in the city, who were invited to come to receive a copy of their own. In addition to discussing her book, Chanda led a wonderful conversation about the intersection of race, the sciences, and what those identities mean within the context of these spaces. As a result, community members from all walks of life could connect, converse, and walk away with a new perspective.
