Calling all future scientists!
The Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County (BGC of MC) will be hosting a teen STEM conference on Thursday, November 10th from 8:30 am-1 pm. Students in grades 4th-9th are invited to participate in workshops, panel discussions, and more. The event will be held at the Spruce Street Clubhouse at 1040 Spruce St. in Lawrenceville, NJ.
In recent years, encouraging young learners to participate in STEM subjects has become a national priority. To sufficiently fill jobs in the sciences and mathematics, significant pushes have been made to make STEM topics and resources more accessible in schools and beyond. By starting young, STEM curriculums can encourage lifelong learning, a more well-rounded educational background, and maybe even a potential career path.
All attendees will be able to participate in a career panel featuring professionals from a variety of STEM fields. Speakers will highlight a variety of post-secondary career pathways and other STEM programs that young people can pursue in high school and beyond. Attendees will also be able to explore potential mentorship opportunities with the invited speakers.
Aside from the career panel, students are welcome to choose three 45-minute workshops to attend. Just a few of the fantastic options attendees can look forward to including:
- Suspension Bridges: Students are invited to explore the world of civil engineering as they are challenged to build the strongest suspension bridge
- Introduction to Python: Future tech wizards will be taught about Python, which is described as a high-level general-purpose coding language. Students will learn about website creation, game design, and more as they learn how their favorite tech is made.
- Cyber Attack!: At a time when almost everything is online, safety is more important than ever. Students will learn more about cybersecurity and be equipped with the tools to protect themselves from cyber-attacks, phishing, and more.
- Oceans, Weather, and Climate: Students can explore the world around them as they examine the physics behind the Earth’s oceans and atmosphere
13 total workshops will be available, so there is sure to be something for every young learner. After the day’s festivities conclude, the young learner in your life will be that much closer to an exciting and fulfilling career.
