Did you know that with just an iPhone and a bit of editing expertise, you can take jaw-dropping photos right from your phone? If you want to explore your iPhone photography skills, the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie will be hosting iPhonography courses starting on November 5th. Enrollment is $75 for Museum Society members and $100 for non-members.

The courses will be taught by award-winning photographer Cheryl Bomba. Cheryl’s work has been featured at several prestigious institutions, including Grounds for Sculpture, the Monmouth Museum, the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie, and more. Cheryl is particularly celebrated for her capacity to interpret themes and translate them into stunning pieces of art. Cheryl is an active member of the arts community and currently serves in the Artists of Bristol on the Delaware, Belmar Arts, Bristol Photographers Club, the Guild of Creative Art, the Hopewell Valley Arts Council, New Hope Arts, New Jersey Photography Forum, the Pennsylvania Center for Photography, and the Photographers’ Group (Founding Member).

The iPhonography course will be broken into four parts, with each class highlighting different ways you can utilize these powerful devices to create extraordinary pieces of art. Each session will cover the following topics:

• Session #1 – The Tools in Your Toolbox (Nov. 5th): Session one will be spent highlighting the basics of the iPhone camera. Attendees will get to explore a variety of the different editing tools that come standard on iPhones, including adjusting light and color, applying filters, undoing and redoing edits, and more. Students will also learn about the different types of images that can be created with iPhones, including portraits, live photos, landscapes, fine art, and more. Hands-on demonstrations and assistance will be available.
• Session #2 – Getting it Right In-Camera (Nov. 12th): This second session will kick off with a “Glow and Grow” session, where students can enjoy each other’s work and show off the photos they’re particularly proud of. Afterward, attendees will explore the importance of perspective and how to take the best photos for various situations, stressing both technical and compositional skills. Participants will then get to practice these skills in a shooting session, indoor or outdoor weather permitting.
• Session #3 – Enhancing Your Image (Nov. 19th): After another Glow and Grow session, participants will be taught about the Snapseed app and the myriad of editing possibilities that it offers. Some highlighted skills include removing unwanted parts of their images and selective color, aka a pop of color in an otherwise black-and-white photo.
• Session #4 – Creativity Unlimited (Dec. 3rd): Participants will get to explore a variety of apps for creative and fine art photography, including apps used for composite photography. After the session, each participant will be invited to show off a few of their favorite photos and discuss the techniques utilized to achieve their results.
