Trenton’s Farmers Market is Up and Running for the Season

After a two-year hiatus, the Captial City Farmers Market (CCFM) is returning to Downtown Trenton.

“This started many years ago up on State Street, and moved to Mill Hill Park. And now it’s starting again after COVID,” said George Asprocolas, an Asprocolas Acres Farmer.

Founded in 1992, the farm is a family-run farm from Millstone, NJ that provides fresh fruits and vegetables to several farmers’ markets.

“We grow product every year. I’m an actual farmer. I grow vegetables, and we take them to the farmer’s market. So it was a blessing when they finally called me,” Asprocolas said.

The local farmer’s market has competitive prices for fruits and vegetables. Dora Mann, from Passaic, NJ, works near the farmers’ market.

“I think it’s important because it gives people options to purchase healthy food and most times farmers market prices are lower than supermarket prices. And when everything’s going up, it’s good to save that extra dollar or 50 cents.” Mann said.

Though this year’s market is small, only hosting Asprocolas Farm, there is still a variety of local items to choose from.

“We try to keep it mostly local produce. But with COVID, (the TDA) asked us to bring in other items as well. So we do carry some non-local items…Right now, the local items are a lot of greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, collard greens, and pickled cucumbers. We have a lot of potted herbs and plants, spring peas, spring onions because a lot of stuff is coming in.”

Michelle Dunphey, Hamilton, and DHS Worker bought her vegetable at the CCFM. “I bought some sweet yellow peaches, zucchini, peppers, and cucumbers…The vegetables are fresh…We are happy to have them back in Trenton,” Dunphey said.

For the 2022 season, the CCFM will reopen on Thursdays from 11 a.m. 2 p.m. The farm stand will be located at the corner of South Warren and Lafayette Streets, next to the “Trenton Makes” bridge sculptures on the side of the Trenton Parking Authority’s Lafayette Street Garage.
