The Kiwanis Club of Trenton is inviting the public to attend a flag dedication ceremony and star planting at the Trenton Battle Monument on Saturday, November 6, 2021 beginning at 10 a.m. The program is part of organization’s commitment to help maintain the Battle Monument, site of Washington’s pivotal victory over the British in December 1776. The giant U.S. flag which flies next to the Monument is periodically replaced by Trenton Kiwanis.
Club members also gather several times a year to clean the surrounding park. This year, Kiwanis is pleased to partner with the V.A.S.T. Center, Inc. and its “Keep Trenton a Star” program to help plant floral stars along the D&R Canal which symbolize the original colonies and form the beginnings of an interpretive history walk along the Canal. The planting will take place immediately following the flag dedication ceremony.
The ceremony will feature a performance by the Catholic Community Choir, as well as participation by local Boy Scouts, clergy and civic leaders. The program and planting are free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Founded in 1918, the Kiwanis Club’s programs have supported children’s services, community events and since 1955, the Times-Kiwanis Camp Fund, which has raised over $2 million for summer camp experiences for Trenton children. In addition to the ongoing Camp Fund, current Kiwanis initiatives include “Vision Trenton,” a collaborative community effort to stimulate economic redevelopment by promoting Trenton’s extensive historic assets.
VAST Center, Inc. is a non-profit addressing chronic education and community development needs utilizing historic and natural resources. VAST has created historic landscaped stars along D&R Canal State Park known as a “Commemoration of USA Star Adoption”. Since 2017, VAST’s “Keep Trenton a Star” program has used hot and cold tolerant flowers that are transplanted the Saturday before every Veterans’ Day and Flag Day to create the stars on the area of the canal park adjacent to the Trenton Battle Monument.
