THT Seeks Input From Community Members with Disabilities
Trenton Health Team is inviting community members with disabilities, and those caring for them, to share their experiences and ideas about how Trenton can become a more inclusive city in a series of online discussions beginning Thursday, November 4, 2021.
These events, supported by the New Jersey Division of Disability Services, offer people with disabilities the opportunity to identify barriers — physical and structural — preventing them from fully participating in community life and accessing helpful services and resources. Eliminating barriers is the goal of THT’s “Collaborating for a Healthy, Inclusive Trenton” initiative.
Discussions will be held via Zoom and are open to the public. Closed captioning is available. Registration is required (please see links below). Topics include:
Community Planning — 6-7:30 pm Thursday November 4
At this session, we will talk about how people with disabilities are engaged in planning for the future of their neighborhoods and communities, identify their priorities and find ways planners, community groups, and government agencies can do a better job of reaching out and including them. Sign up here
Social Services — 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday November 18
We are inviting people with disabilities to recommend ways to improve community services and connections with support systems. Sign up here
Food Access — 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday December 2
Together, we will explore challenges people with disabilities face when trying to access healthy food, as well as accommodations that would benefit people with disabilities who use food banks or pantries. Sign up here.
“We want to create a more inclusive and vibrant community,” said THT Program Manager Stephanie Doering, whose mother uses a wheelchair. “Our listening sessions aim to ensure those with disabilities are at the table, helping to plan programs and policies that affect our community.”
THT is hosting a separate series of discussions with service providers and policymakers focusing on better engaging people with disabilities in their ongoing work, ensuring residents with disabilities are aware of and can access the full range of services and supports available, and developing processes to include people within community planning initiatives.
To learn more, contact THT Program Manager Stephanie Doering (609-256-4555 ext. 187)
Please inform THT about any accommodations that would be helpful.
