Mayor Gusciora Announces Second Youth Advisory Council to Start Spring 2021
On Wednesday, January 13, 2020, Mayor W. Reed Gusciora announced the launch of his second Youth Advisory Council to work with middle and high school students from all four Trenton wards on various initiatives throughout the year.
The Council is designed to encourage civic engagement among young people, expose youth to day-to-day municipal government operations, and offer hands-on public policy experience.
The group will consist of two young people, grades eight through 12, from each of Trenton’s four wards. Participants will engage directly with department directors and the Mayor’s Office during monthly meetings held virtually until the COVID-19 threat has passed.
“We’re proud to keep our Youth Advisory Council active and ensure that the next generation has a seat at the table,” said Mayor Gusciora. “As the future leaders of Trenton, we want them to understand civil service and get excited about serving their community. We also want them to freely express their concerns and ideas to make Trenton a better place to live, which is all the more important given what they have had to endure during virtual learning this year.”
Last year, the City concluded its first Youth Council in a decade. The Council met on expanding student usage of the WIN mobile application, which helps connect Trenton youth to shelter, food, education, jobs, and other services. They also worked to increase awareness of recreational programming and improve transportation options for city youth.
Applications for the Youth Advisory Council are due February 5, 2021 by 12:00 p.m. To apply or find more information, visit https://bit.ly/3ibJcnC or contact Gary Lawery, Mayor’s Aide, at 609-989-3837 or glawery@trentonnj.org
