Trenton Area STEM Council: Expanding Education in the Capital City

In the heart of New Jersey’s capital, an innovative community movement is paving the way for equitable STEM education for all Trenton students. The Trenton Area STEM Council is dedicated to expanding access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for students and families across Mercer County, helping to bridge opportunity gaps and prepare the next generation for the fields of the future.

Formed through partnerships between educators, local nonprofits, and other community-based organizations, the council has quickly become a major driver of expanded STEM education opportunities in our community. By providing the region’s youth with comprehensive and accessible STEM education, the Trenton Area STEM Council is playing a pivotal role in empowering the next generation of thinkers, thought-leaders, and innovators.

Recently, Trenton Daily had the opportunity to speak with Tracy Hewitt, the Millhill STEM Program Leader at Millhill Child and Family Development. The conversation centered the heart behind the Trenton Area STEM Council, the real-world impact for our community’s students, and what lies ahead for the future of the council.

Per Hewitt, “The Trenton Area STEM Council is a collaborative initiative dedicated to advancing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and career opportunities for youth in Mercer County, NJ. By bringing together local educators, community leaders, businesses, and organizations, the council works to create equitable access to high-quality STEM learning experiences for students of all ages. Through partnerships, and programming, the Trenton Area STEM Council aims to inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers while creating a strong pipeline of local talent in the STEM field.”

Regarding what inspired the formation of the Trenton Area STEM Council, Ms. Hewitt shared, “The Trenton Area STEM Council was started in 2022 in response to a growing need for greater collaboration among STEM educators and program providers in the Trenton area. At the time, many were working in isolation, each doing important work but without the benefit of shared resources, ideas, or support. We recognized that by coming together, we could amplify our impact and create a more cohesive, supportive STEM ecosystem.”

Reflecting on the goals of the council, Hewitt noted, “Our primary goal is to empower the next generation of science and technology leaders by strengthening the network of educators, mentors, and organizations who work directly with youth. Through collaboration, our goal is to foster innovation, share best practices, and ensure that all young people in the Trenton area have access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities.”

“STEM education is not only a critical pathway to academic and career success, it also plays an important role in building students’ confidence and social-emotional skills. By providing access to meaningful STEM experiences, we help youth in our community see themselves as capable future leaders.” Said, Hewitt. “Our mission is to empower students to explore new ideas, take risks, and imagine themselves in STEM related fields. We are proud to collaborate with a strong network of partners including Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H, Splash Floating Classroom, The Watershed Institute, Mercer County Parks Commission, Foundation Academies, The New Jersey Department of Health Public Health and Environmental Laboratories and many others who have collectively impacted countless students through hands-on, engaging STEM programming. The Trenton Area STEM Council is committed to continuing and expanding this vital work, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.”

When asked about the most rewarding part of her experience with the Council, Ms. Hewitt shared, “Since co-founding the Trenton Area STEM Council with Rodrigo Sanchez Hernandez of Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H in 2022, it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch the Council grow and evolve. The most fulfilling part has been witnessing the meaningful collaborations that have emerged through our network. Organizations that might never have crossed paths are now working together to bring hands-on STEM opportunities to local students. One example is Foundation Academies, a local charter school that has been an active participant in the Council. Through their involvement, they’ve connected with several community-based organizations, allowing them to offer a wide range of enriching STEM activities to their students. Seeing these connections flourish and directly benefit young people in our community is what makes this work so meaningful.”

For those looking to get involved, Tracy shared, “We would love for community members, especially teachers, to take part in the STEM Council meetings and to see what we are doing.” The Council meets once every other month, making this an accessible option for those interested in doing their part.

The Trenton Area STEM Council also invites the community to their upcoming event on May 8th at the Tulpehaking Nature Center 4:00-5:30pm. All are welcome – no STEM experience needed! At the event, attendees will have the opportunity to network, enjoy STEM demonstrations, and connect with nature and community.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more regarding how you can get involved, please contact Tracy Hewitt at tnhewitt@gmail.com or Rodrigo Sanchez Hernandez at rs2151@njaes.rutgers.edu for more information.

As the Trenton Area STEM Council boldly pursues its future, one thing is clear: the next generation of scientists is getting their start right in the heart of Trenton.
