EPA Begins Restoration Work at Sonny Veeren Playground

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin restoration work at Sonny Vereen Playground yesterday, September 30, 2024, which will include the installation of clean soil, grass, and mulch. This project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete. During this time, the park will remain temporarily closed to ensure safety.

On Thursday, September 26, 2024, the EPA completed the installation of protective soil covers, clean soil, grass, and mulch at Breunig Avenue Park. Some sections of the park will remain fenced off to allow the grass to establish, the improvements represent a significant step towards improving environmental conditions in our community.

Key Points About EPA’s Work in the City:

  • Discovery: EPA discovered elevated levels of lead in surface soils at Sonny Vereen Playground and Breunig Avenue Park in the winter 2024 as part of investigation for the Historic Potteries Site.
  • National Priorities List: The EPA is proposing to add the Historic Potteries site in Trenton, New Jersey to the National Priorities List, or NPL, based on the results of an extensive investigation that began in 2018. This means that the site is eligible for federal funding to pay for extensive, long-term cleanup actions under the EPA’s Superfund program
  • Free Soil Testing for Residents: The EPA is also testing soil at residential properties in East Trenton for free. If you would like the EPA to test the soil at your property for free, please call Jonathan Byk at (347) 899-6210.
