Teachers are the backbone of building the next generation, tasked with the important responsibility of stewarding and nurturing the minds of our community’s youth. While every teacher is a hero, some educators go above and beyond to show up for their students and make a difference in the lives of their pupils. From offering extra help on tricky subjects to reassuring their students that they’re capable of achieving their dreams, it is profound the impact that one teacher can have on the countless lives which pass through their classroom.

For the last several years, Nicole has worked with rising sophomores in the Princeton University Preparatory Program, where she has created a six-week hands-on science curriculum that empowers students to work collaboratively, utilizing the scientific method, to explore scientific questions and work through experimental laboratory science. She has taken students to visit research facilities such as the Princeton Physics Plasma Laboratory, Rutgers University Protein Data Bank, and PTC Therapeutics Laboratory. Nicole’s ultimate goal is to start a high school biotechnology program for students to gain more exposure to opportunities in the ever-changing field of science.

In her remarks, Ms. Hamlet shared, “I have spent the last 19 years working in the City of Trenton and I love what I do. I love my students, under the direction of our superintendent and our amazing principal, Mrs. Mary Courtney. We absolutely love coming in every day and watching our students grow.” Continuing, she shared “Education, as my mother always taught us, is the most powerful thing. My background started long before I decided to become a teacher. I had a powerful mother that pushed us to excel, and that’s exactly what I do for my students – I push them to excel in their designated area. And that doesn’t have to be science – it could be businesses, it could be computer technology, but all of the students here in the City of Trenton are unique and powerful, and we need to empower them, because this is their future.”
