Who is David Blearley, and why is his story so central to Trenton’s history? As it turns out, while his story is seldom told alongside the likes of men like James Madison or John Adams, his life was just as integral to the establishment of a free nation. David Bearly served as Chief Justice of the NJ Supreme Court in 1780, and throughout his career, was integral in establishing the legal precedents and procedures which have shaped our justice system today. Of his many accomplishments, he was responsible for the 1780 ruling that serves as today’s precedent to declare a law unconstitutional. But it is his role in the shaping of the original constitution in 1787 that is most crucial, and has been sadly overlooked. The establishment of The David Brearley Center for the American Constitution is a bipartisan effort should capture the attention of ‘originalist’ conservatives and liberals alike. St. Michael’s has invited justices, past and present legislators and governors of New Jersey to participate in this effort to firmly establish Mr. Brearley’s legacy. And the time has come for this story to finally be woven into our city’s historic fabric.
Recently years have proven to be a turning point for St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, and with new changes comes new opportunities to impact and uplift the world around us. But this meaningful work is not possible without ongoing support and enthusiasm from members of our community. As fundraising technologies and other modern innovations have fundamentally changed the face of the philanthropic landscape, St. Michael’s has taken a special interest in employing new methods to bring these important projects to life. From discussing the role NFTs play in non-profit fundraising to establishing itself as a hub for community education and educational resources, an exciting future rests ahead for this daring and forward-thinking institution.
As our Capital City triumphantly forges ahead into a bold and bright vision of the future, it will take each and every one of us doing our part in assuring Trenton’s story is shared with the world. From its humbling beginnings to its triumphant role in American history, Trenton has always had its finger on the pulse of our nation’s boundless opportunity. And now, as a new story arises in our midst, your contribution can help shape the Capital City of tomorrow. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this historic venture!
