Trenton’s August City Wide Cleanup: A Call to Action for a Cleaner, Greener Community

Trenton’s August City Wide Cleanup: A Call to Action for a Cleaner, Greener Community
Statement provided by Mayor of Trenton, W. Reed Gusciora

As we approach August, I am excited to announce Trenton’s City-Wide Cleanup initiative, a month-long effort aimed at making our city cleaner, greener, and more vibrant. This year, we are focusing on household bulk garbage collection, including furniture and yard waste, to ensure our neighborhoods are free from clutter and more inviting for all residents.

Starting this August, every Saturday will be dedicated to bulk garbage collection. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to maintaining the beauty and health of our city. By providing a convenient way for residents to dispose of large items, we aim to prevent illegal dumping and keep our public spaces pristine. Bulk garbage will be picked up in the South Ward on August 3rd, in the North Ward on August 10th, in the East Ward on August 17th, and in the West Ward on August 24th. Please no electronic waste or construction debris.

Why This Matters

A clean city is more than just aesthetically pleasing; it is crucial for public health and community pride. Accumulated bulk waste can be a breeding ground for pests and pose safety hazards. By actively participating in the cleanup, we are taking a proactive step towards safeguarding our environment and enhancing the quality of life for all Trentonians.

How to Participate

Participation is simple. On designated Saturdays, residents can place their bulk items before 7am, such as old furniture and yard waste, at the curb for collection. The city’s sanitation department will handle the rest, ensuring that these items are properly disposed of or recycled when possible. Detailed information on the collection schedule and guidelines can be found on the city’s website.

Recognizing Our Public Works Heroes

Our City-Wide Cleanup would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our Public Works crew, led by Director Wahab Onitiri. Last year, their efforts resulted in the collection of an impressive 242.9 tons of bulk waste across Trenton’s wards:

· West Ward – 72.01 tons

· South Ward – 55.89 tons

· East Ward – 55 tons

· North Ward – 60 tons

This year, about 30 staff members have been dedicated to the cleanup effort, with approximately 30 sites per ward identified for cleanup before the general bulk pickup on Saturdays. We predict that we will collect around 75 tons of garbage each Saturday, a testament to our ongoing commitment to keeping Trenton clean. I also want to thank our City Council for their contributions and support to the effort as well as providing the funding for this project!

Community Involvement

This initiative is not just about waste removal; it is about community building. I encourage everyone to come together, not only to clean up their own properties but to assist neighbors who may need help moving heavy items. Let’s use this opportunity to strengthen our community bonds and show what we can achieve when we work together.

As hip-hop artist J. Cole said, “There’s beauty in the struggle.” By working together to clean up our city, we can find beauty in our collective effort and the improved surroundings we create.

Looking Ahead

The City-Wide Cleanup is just one part of our broader environmental strategy. We are continuously exploring ways to enhance our waste management systems, promote recycling, and educate the public about sustainable practices. Your participation in this cleanup is a crucial step towards these goals.

I urge all Trentonians to take part in this important initiative. Let’s make August a month of transformation, where we all come together to create a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful Trenton. Together, we can make a significant impact and set a positive example for future generations.

Thank you for your commitment to our city. #CleanTrenton #TrentonMakes
