Juneteenth National Independence Day is a national holiday which commemorates the abolition of slavery in the United States. The holiday is regarded as America’s second independence day and holds great significance to the course of our nation’s history. In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation officially took hold, marking the end of slavery in the United States. While the law went into effect on January 1st, however, not all were yet freed. For regions still under Confederate control, the law could not be enforced. However, on June 19th, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, TX, where over 250,000 enslaved people were freed under executive action. On June 17th, 2021, President Biden signed a bill into law which officially declared Juneteenth the 11th American federal holiday. Juneteenth is a special opportunity to come together as a nation, celebrate our progress, and educate ourselves and our communities regarding the profound achievements of the African American community.
