The D&R Greenway Land Trust recently announced that applications are now open for the organization’s 2024 Summer Fellowship. Applications are open to anyone ages 18 and older, with priority given to young people from Trenton. The D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Summer Fellowship program is a wonderful opportunity to learn more and contribute to the important work of the The Discovery Center at Point Breeze, the Historic Garden, and the D&R Greenway’s Kayak Program. In order to apply, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age; no upper age limits
  • Provide transportation to work sites
  • Positive attitude, friendly, ability to interact with the public
  • Ability to do physical work and gardening outdoors
  • Commitment to working Saturdays and Sundays for summer
  • Dependable for regular weekend and weekday shifts
  • Initiative to develop and complete related Capstone Project

Prior to the start of the Fellowship, participating fellows will have the opportunity to attend an all-expense paid orientation camp at the Pocono Environmental Training Center, which will be held from June 12th through 14th. Fellows will be expected to participate in regular shifts throughout the summer from June 15th through August 18th, with the potential for extension. Please note that fellows will occasionally be required to participate in evening programs, and should be prepared to work weekends as well. All fellows will receive $16.25 per hour as compensation for their efforts. The Summer Fellowship is funded by the William Penn Foundation partnership with the Alliance for Watershed Education of the Delaware River. To submit your application, please send a letter of interest along with your resume and references to ptbreezemanager@drgreenway.org.

This fellowship opportunity is a wonderful chance to connect with the community, get out in nature, and enjoy a more well-rounded education of the region’s abundant natural resources. Per Linda Mead, President and CEO of the D&R Greenway Land Trust, “This Fellowship will enhance both the educational and career experience of the candidate selected, who will become a member of a larger cohort with the Alliance for Watershed Education.”

Ms. Mead went on to share about the historic and cultural importance of the D&R Greenway, stating “The preservation story of Point Breeze, a 60-acre property preserved by New Jersey Green Acres, D&R Greenway Land Trust, and the City of Bordentown, is an ecologically important property at the confluence of the Delaware River and the Crosswicks Creek in Bordentown, NJ. just south of Trenton. The property’s history goes back to the native Lenape people 13,000 years ago, and the estate of the exiled King of Spain, Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte.” Continuing, she noted “Whether helping to lead an educational kayak experience, tending to a historic sharing garden, or guiding a tour of the Discovery Center, each day promises to align as a unique fellowship opportunity.”

Nancy Faherty, D&R Greenway’s Director of Donor and Community Engagement, expressed the depth of the fellowship’s significance beyond being a paid summer job along the river in Bordentown, NJ. She emphasized its connection with The Alliance for Watershed Education, a group supported by The William Penn Foundation. A decade ago, the Foundation initiated the Delaware River Watershed Initiative (DRWI) to combat four major threats to clean water in the river basin: stormwater, agricultural runoff, deforestation, and groundwater depletion. “Over the years, the Foundation has collaborated closely with D&R Greenway due to our alignment with their efforts. The person selected for this Fellowship will become part of a cohort that they can continue to work with as a future environmentalist,” Faherty said.
