Celebrate Our Seniors in the Capital City
May is Older Americans Month, and throughout the country, individuals and organizations are celebrating their community’s golden residents. Our older residents are a beacon of inspiration, offering nuggets of hard-earned knowledge to the next generation. Today and every day, we celebrate those who have blazed trails before us and honor the paths they have forged. The City of Trenton invites you to join the celebration on Thursday, May 25th, for “Aging Unbound” in the Capital City.
On May 25th, the City of Trenton’s Office on Aging will host “Aging Unbound,” an Older Americans Month celebration. This event will occur from 10 am to 1 pm at the Sam Naples Center, 611 Chestnut Ave, Trenton, NJ 08611. Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy various activities, including door prizes, light refreshments, games, music, and more. In addition to this afternoon fun, guests ages 60 and older can submit documentation for open enrollment. Overall, the day will be a fun opportunity to celebrate Trenton’s seniors, get together in the community, and connect our older Trentonians with the resources they need to thrive.
This year’s Older Americans Month theme, “Aging Unbound,” invites Americans in all stages of life to explore the rich diversity of lived experiences in aging. This celebration promotes the well-being, inclusion, and prosperity of our nation’s seniors each year. In the White House’s statement on this year’s Older Americans Month, President Biden stated, “On this 60th anniversary of Older Americans Month, we honor our Nation’s senior citizens, whose lifetimes of hard work, devotion to family, and commitment to community have laid the foundation for the country we are today. We have a rock-solid responsibility to ensure our Nation’s seniors can age with dignity and financial security.” Our elders are an invaluable asset to our nation’s fabric, and May is the perfect time to prioritize seniors in our community.
Although the upcoming event is a one-day celebration, there are resources for our community’s seniors 24/7, 365 days a year. Trenton’s Office on Aging connects our seniors with various crucial resources, including healthcare, rent reduction, social security assistance, home energy, taxes, etc. The Office also offers home visits for those homebound or otherwise unable to attend appointments. In addition, if you’re a senior in the community looking to connect with peers and enjoy a day out in the community, you will also want to take advantage of Trenton’s four city-operated senior centers.
At Trenton’s senior centers, guests can participate in a wide variety of activities, including bingo and card games, recreational trips and excursions, on-site social services, sign language courses, nutrition/health workshops, creative activities, including dance, sewing, singing, and more.
A day spent at one of the city’s senior centers is a great way to keep the mind active, learn a new skill, and meet with like-minded community members. No matter your activity of choice, taking advantage of Trenton’s senior centers is a fantastic resource for the mind, body, and soul.
