Upward Bound Now Accepting Applications for Summer Program

Summer is right around the corner, and although the end of the school year is approaching, that doesn’t mean the learning has to end!

Middle school students in the Trenton area are invited to participate in Upward Bound’s Pathway to College program. Students attending either Arthur J. Holland Middle School, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Grace Dunn Middle School, or Trenton Catholic Preparatory Academy are eligible to apply. This program is entirely free to participate in. Applications, which are due by April 15th, can be found here: Apply – Upward Bound. Only 20 slots are available, so if you are interested in participating, please submit your applications as soon as possible.

The summer seminar is divided into three categories: academic enrichment, cultural experiences, and personal development. Throughout the summer, students will have the opportunity to take advantage of a wide variety of resources, including:

  • Academic Enrichment:
    • Assistance with college applications
    • Assistance with essay writing
    • College tours
    • PSAT/SAT/ACT prep
    • Tutoring
  • Cultural Experiences:
    • Community service opportunities
    • Field trips, including: Beat the Bomb – NYC, Dorney Park – PA, rock climbing, canoeing, museums, musicals, and plays
  • Personal Development:
    • Entrepreneurial and financial literacy workshop
    • Leadership Summit
    • Public speaking
    • Mentorship program

This program is an incredible chance for middle school students to engage in new experiences, continue cultivating academic and personal development throughout the summer, and even begin laying the groundwork for their future collegiate plans.

This summer program is a part of Upward Bound at Mercer County Community College. Upward Bound is a program designed for students entering or in the 9th grade considering college or trade school. Hosted at Trenton’s James Kerney Campus, participating students are given access to a wide array of personal development resources to help make the journey to college a more straightforward, more rewarding experience.

Members of Upward Bound are granted access to several valuable resources and opportunities, including free college and trade school applications, fee waivers for the SAT and ACT, financial aid assistance, summer work-study opportunities, and so much more. Per their mission statement, “The mission of Upward Bound is to encourage and assist people who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education because of income, family educational background, disability, or other relevant federal, state, provincial or institutional criteria, in preparation for entry to, and completion of a post-secondary education.”
