Masks are an essential aspect of many African cultures. Masks may be used for performative purposes and were frequently worn by dancers and incorporated into ceremonies. Beyond their visual beauty, masks also represent a profound spiritual significance, representing the unseen forces interconnected to the community. Masks can represent fertility, weddings, initiation rites, funerals, and more. With both ritualistic and artistic importance, masks hold significant meaning throughout the African continent and symbolize a profound connection with the spiritual realm. This workshop offers the opportunity to dive more into this beautiful culture and celebrate just one of the many incredible aspects of Black History Month.
