“To Truly Be: The Vulnerability and Sustainability of the Black Mind” Workshop Coming to Artworks
In the hustle and bustle of this busy season, self-care is critical now more than ever. Through healthy coping mechanisms, movement, and mindfulness, individuals are better equipped to handle the challenges and stress of day-to-day life. To provide these much-needed resources to our community, Artworks has announced their workshop series entitled “To Truly Be: The Vulnerability and Sustainability of the Black Mind.” The workshops will be held on December 17th and January 21st from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Admission is $12 per class and will include yoga instruction as well as take-home tools and resources to help participants manage stress and anxiety.
The workshop will focus on both the psychological and physiological benefits of mindfulness and self-care. Through practices like yoga, meditation, and breathwork, participants are empowered to take matters into their own hands and protect their peace. This event is specifically curated for the BIPOC community, allowing participants to deconstruct the stigmas and stereotypes surrounding mental health. The event seeks to hold space for POC to encounter and explore resources to preserve Black Mental Health. By preserving and protecting one’s mental space, individuals can realign and present the best version of themselves to the world around them.
The preservation of mental health is of critical importance for communities that often go overlooked and underserved in this area. According to research conducted by the American Psychiatric Association, although there are similar instances of mental health disorders amongst all populations, POC often endures a disproportionately higher burden of disability as a result of mental health struggles. Lack of cultural understanding from mental health professionals may also contribute to misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis. Eliminating barriers to care and providing culturally-sensitive resources are the first step in empowering diverse communities to heal and take charge of their mental health.
