The New Jersey Primary Election is Being Held Today, Here’s What You Need to Know

The New Jersey Primary Election is being held today, Tuesday, June 7, across the city of Trenton.

The primary election will decide who goes up to the general election in November. The general election is scheduled for November 8, 2022. Currently, two candidates on the Ballot for the 12th district are the Democratic incumbent Bonnie Watson Coleman who is running unopposed, and Republican primary candidate Darius Mayfield, who is also running unopposed.

In total, Fifty-five candidates filed to run for New Jersey’s 12 U.S. House districts, including 20 Democrats and 35 Republicans, according to ballotpedia.org.

This general election will be the first to take place under the new district guidelines following the 2020 census. According to NJspotlightnews.org, “Redistricting did not change the partisan makeup of the 12th much. The voter registration split is 44% Democrats, 17% Republicans and about 37% unaffiliated.”

In addition, Schools that are poling locations have been encouraged by the New Jersey Department of Education to pivot to virtual instruction (within the parameters of N.J.S.A. 18A:7f-9) due to the number of individuals entering to vote.

Twelve schools within the Trenton School district are designated polling locations and will have classes virtually today, Tuesday, June 7.

The schools are as follows:

  • Trenton Central High School
  • Grace A. Dunn Middle School
  • Hedgepeth-Williams Middle School
  • Columbus Elementary School

  • Gregory Elementary School
  • Joyce A. Kilmer Elementary School
  • Mott Elementary School
  • Monument Elementary School
  • P.J. Hill Elementary School
  • Wilson Elementary School
  • Washington Elementary School

“Students impacted by the virtual day will receive a Tuesday grab-and-go meal kit with breakfast, lunch and a snack on Monday,” Trenton Public Schools Superintendent James Earle said in an announcement on Monday.

If your school is not listed, you will have in-person instruction.

Only schools designated as polling locations were approved to be virtual by the N.J.D.O.E. Instructions will be conducted virtually for the schools listed above. Students will follow their regular full-day schedule.
