Princeton eBikes Raises Funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County
After 12 years of operating the Trenton Bike Exchange, an all volunteer group effort that collects, repairs and sells used bikes in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County (BGCMC), founder Russ White decided to venture out into the niche market of electric bicycles, or eBikes, with the same impactful goal – to support BGCMC.
One month ago, White opened up one of the only electric bicycle stores in the central Jersey area, Princeton eBikes. The shop floor is home to 25 different models of eBikes purchased from seven separate vendors. With prices starting at $2,000 up to $100,000, White plans to rack up further funding for BGCMC through sales.
“Like the Trenton Bike Exchange, 100 percent of the proceeds will be going towards the Boys and Girls Clubs in Trenton,” said White. “[The Trenton Bike Exchange] has been one of the most satisfying efforts of my life. I hope to repeat this experience with this new venture, Princeton eBikes.”
According to White, there is a growing desire for eBikes in the area, especially in Princeton, NJ. In a recent study done by Globenewswire, the rise in popularity has proven to be true.
“The global electric bikes market is expected grow from $18.46 billion in 2020 to $19.91 billion in 2021 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9 percent,” wrote Globenewswire. “The growth is mainly due to the companies resuming their operations and adapting to the new normal while recovering from the COVID-19 impact, which had earlier led to restrictive containment measures involving social distancing, remote working, and the closure of commercial activities that resulted in operational challenges. The market is expected to reach $26.3 billion in 2025 at a CAGR of 7 percent.”
The biking industry in general has been booming since the beginning of the pandemic. Bike shops across the nation are emptying their stores daily as they sell out of stock. Throughout 2020, the Trenton Bike Exchange sold a record-number of bicycles to the Trenton community. That demand continues to rise.
During this year’s first quarter, the Exchange has tripled sales compared to any former year, according to Ira Saltiel, the new President of the BGC Bicycle Exchange in a previous TrentonDaily article. Just earlier this month, the Exchange broke another record with the most donations received in one drive.
Although White hopes Princeton eBikes sees a similar trend with a high number of sales, for him, any funding that can be raised for BGCMC is worth it.
“One reason I donate [exclusively to BGCMC] is because their mission is to help people. There is no better mission than that,” said White. “The second reason is it’s a large organization… it’s an efficient organization with a great mission.”
