The City of Trenton reached their goal of 3000 people registered the faith-based initiative Covid-19 vaccine program. The State of New Jersey and FEMA teamed up with Trenton’s local religious leaders from 36 congregations in order to get more Trentonians vaccinated, particularly from communities of color.

“We thank all members of Trenton’s diverse religious community who came together to truly take advantage of this wonderful opportunity provided by our federal and state partners,” said Mayor W. Reed Gusciora. “We can now say that we are one big step closer to putting this pandemic behind us!”

The community-based vaccination sites are supported through a partnership by the New Jersey Department of Health, New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and U.S. Department of Defense, in addition to local faith leaders, nonprofit organizations, local officials, and health departments. The initial phase of the community-based vaccination partnership included not just Trenton, but additional sites in Somerset, Elizabeth, Vineland, and Paterson. The first launch vaccine was administered Monday, February 15 at the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset.

These cities were strategically selected as they have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and are some of the most diverse and socio-economically challenged communities in the state. The community-based vaccination partnership plans to vaccinate 15,000 residents through the end of March.

“Among our highest priorities is ensuring equitable access to appointments and vaccinations,” said Governor Murphy on February 12 during the announcement of the initiative. “We are grateful for this unique partnership between our state agencies, federal government, and faith and local leaders as we begin this new phase in our vaccination effort to provide New Jerseyans with access to vaccine.”
