Old Barracks Hosts Virtual Telethon to Support New Virtual Field Trips
Join the Old Barracks Museum online on Saturday, October 10 at 1 p.m. for a virtual telethon fundraiser to support the educational programming of the Old Barracks Museum, including the new Connecting to the Revolution virtual field trips! It’s free to tune in, and donations will be accepted at barracks.org/telethon from now through the end of the event!
Due to COVID-19, the Old Barracks Museum will not be hosting its annual Tavern Night event, which is the primary fundraising event for the museum’s educational programs. While we are sorry to miss sharing Tavern Night with everyone, the staff is planning a telethon of video content to be streamed via Facebook Live and Zoom on October 10 at 1 p.m. The content will range from historical to hysterical, and be performed by staff, volunteers, and friends of the Old Barracks. Throughout the telethon, donations will be solicited and collected via Facebook donations and PayPal to help support the educational programming of the Old Barracks Museum.
In a normal year, nearly 10,000 NJ students visit the Old Barracks Museum on a field trip with their classmates. This year, on-site field trips are going to be replaced with Connecting to the Revolution, a selection of seven live virtual field trip programs. Classes will be able to take this field trip from school, home, or a hybrid of the two. The program is a mix of live and pre-recorded video, and students will be able to ask questions and interact with Historical Interpreters.
The Old Barracks Museum closed its doors in March as a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and reopened with capacity restrictions and mask requirements on July 2. During the closure, and extending beyond it, museum staff has presented virtual presentations related to the history of the 18th century on Facebook Live, with hundreds of viewers for each program.
This event is sponsored by NJM Insurance Group, OceanFirst Foundation, Karl Weidel Insurance, and Chambers Walk. For more information visit https://www.barracks.org/telethon.html.
